In 1803 and again the following year, he was honored with a silver palette from the Society of Arts, a testament to his burgeoning skill as a watercolourist. His meticulous approach to detail made him an invaluable contributor to significant publications of the early nineteenth century, most notably John Britton's The Architectural Antiquities of Great Britain. Through these works, Shepherd provided much-needed visual documentation of historical structures, such as Tynemouth Priory, imbuing architectural studies with a sense of historical weight and atmospheric depth.

The narrative of George Shepherd is deeply intertwined with the vibrant publishing world of London. He worked frequently with the renowned publisher Rudolph Ackermann, contributing to celebrated series such as Ackermann's Repository of Arts. These publications often featured the work of both George and his brother, Thomas Hosmer Shepherd, creating a familial legacy of topographical excellence.
