A Multi-Faceted Creator
Félix-Henri "Henry" Bataille was a French poet, playwright, engraver, and lithographer who gained popularity during the early 20th century. Although he attended the École des Beaux-Arts and Académie Julian to study painting, he began his writing career at the age of fourteen. While his early works included poetry, such as La Chambre blanche (1895) and La divine tragédie (1917), he became an exclusive playwright following the success of his second play, La Lépreuse in 1896.
Bataille's dramatic works explored themes regarding the effects of passion on human motivation and the impact of social conventions. His later repertoire gravitated towards social drama and the theatre of ideas. He was also recognized as a theorist of subconscious motivation.
