demuth's artistic career began to take shape after his studies in the united states. he later attended académie colarossi and académie julian in paris, where he became an integral part of the avant-garde art scene. the city’s acceptance of his homosexuality also had a significant impact on his work, fostering creativity and challenging societal norms of the time. returning to america, demuth retained elements of cubism within his oeuvre, reflecting the influence of his Parisian experiences. he embraced geometric forms and flattened perspectives—techniques borrowed from Picasso and Braque—to convey an objective representation of reality.

notable works and precisionism

demuth’s most celebrated masterpiece, the figure five in gold, was inspired by william carlos williams's poem "the great figure." this painting exemplifies precisionism’s core principles: a quasi-cubist approach characterized by sharply defined lines and planes; an urban landscape devoid of figures—focusing instead on architectural structures like skyscrapers—and a deliberate simplification of form. other noteworthy works include his “poster portraits,” tributes to fellow artists such as georgia o’keeffe, arthur dove, and eugene o'neill, demonstrating demuth’s versatility and engagement with contemporary artistic discourse. key characteristics of precisionism:

• quasi-cubist, sharply defined manner
• urban and rural landscapes with industrial features
• highly structured scenes lacking figures
