Anders Monsen Askevold entered the world in 1834 in Askvoll, Sunnfjord, Norway. He was born into a family of ten siblings, the second oldest, to a father who served as a teacher and a member of parliament. His early years were rooted in the quiet rhythms of his homeland, a connection that would later define his entire artistic output. At thirteen, he began his formal training in Bergen under the landscape painter Hans Leganger Reuch.

His path eventually led him far beyond the borders of Norway. Askevold sought deeper instruction in the great art centers of Europe, moving through the studios of Düsseldorf, Munich, and Paris. In Düsseldorf, he studied under Hans Frederik Gude between 1855 and 1859, a period that deeply influenced his approach to light and terrain. While he spent winters in Germany, his heart often returned to the summers in Norway, where the fjords and mountains provided his most enduring subjects.

The Language of the Fjord and Field

Askevold’s work is closely tied to the Düsseldorf school of painting, a style that emphasized a realistic yet romanticized view of nature. He focused heavily on the landscapes of Western Norway, capturing the specific atmosphere of the fjords and coastal regions. His paintings often depict the quiet, pastoral life of the Norwegian countryside, where mountains meet the water and livestock graze in summer pastures.

His ability to translate the national character of Norway onto canvas brought him significant honors, including medals won in both Vienna and Philadelphia, as well as a gold medal awarded in London in 1884.

Beyond landscapes, he also undertook religious commissions, such as painting altarpieces for churches like the Askvoll Church in 1859. He settled in Düsseldorf in 1878, where he remained until his death in 1900. Today, his legacy is preserved in important collections, including the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design in Oslo and the Bergen Billedgalleri, ensuring that his vision of the Norwegian landscape remains accessible to those who seek to understand the era's romantic national expression.
