A Life of Devotion and Stone

Jan Boeksent lived a life defined by the quiet rhythms of the monastery and the physical demands of his craft. Born in Ghent in 1660, he was a man who found his calling both in the spiritual and the tactile. As a Franciscan friar, he took his vows in August 1685, committing himself to a life of service. Yet, even within the walls of the monastery, his hands remained busy with the heavy materials of his trade. He did not merely pray; he shaped the very substance of his faith through wood and marble.

His training began under the guidance of Pieter Verbrugghen I, a relationship that helped shape his approach to the Flemish baroque style. This period of learning allowed him to master the difficult art of carving, turning hard surfaces into fluid forms. His work was not solitary in its influence, as he also passed these skills to others, including Hendrik Pulinx, who followed in his footsteps.

The Marks of a Sculptor

The work left behind by Boeksent carries the weight of his dual identity as a friar and an artist. His carvings were often destined for the most sacred spaces, where they could interact with light and liturgy. He focused on the intricate details of baroque ornamentation, working primarily with wood and marble to create lasting religious imagery.

Some of his notable contributions can be found in several significant locations:

  • The church of St. Peter in Gent, where his carvings reside.
  • The Ghent Cathedral, specifically the tomb of Philippus Erardus van der Noot.
  • The pulpit and various other carvings within the St. Joseph Minor Seminary in Sint-Niklaas.

A Final Rest in Ghent

Boeksent’s presence in the history of Flemish sculpture is tied to his ability to bring movement to static materials. He did not seek fame outside of his religious and professional circles, but his ability to manipulate marble and wood left a physical mark on the churches of his region. His life came to an end in 1727, within the same monastery in Ghent where he had lived much of his life. He remains a figure whose hands worked for both the church and the art of his time.
