tseng kwong chi, also known as joseph tseng, was a hong kong-born american photographer who was active in the east village art scene in the 1980s. he is the brother of dancer/choreographer muna tseng. tseng is best known for his photographic series 'expeditionary self-portrait series a.k.a. east meets west' where he poses as a chinese tourist in front of iconic landmarks around the world. he studied photography at l'académie julian in paris and became a fixture of new york’s downtown art scene in 1978. tseng passed away in 1990 due to aids-related complications.
