Early Life and Artistic Training

Mathieu Elias enters the historical record in 1658, born in Nord, France. The circumstances of his birth are defined by scarcity; born at Peena, near Cassel, his parents live in extreme poverty. As a young boy, his life is measured by the labor of tending cattle. He exists in this humble state until a chance encounter shifts his trajectory. While working, he begins tracing objects on the ground, a repetitive motion that catches the eye of Philippe De Corbehem, a painter from Dunkirk. De Corbehem recognizes a specific disposition in the boy, a natural inclination toward form and line that transcends his station.

The transition from laborer to apprentice is swift. Moved by the boy's talent, De Corbehem convinces the mother to entrust the child to his care. This mentorship provides the first formal structure to Elias's developing skill. The training is not confined to the local region. After a period of instruction under De Corbehem, the boy is sent to Paris. This move to the capital marks a significant leap in his technical development, placing him in the center of French artistic life to refine the instincts first observed in the dirt of Peena.

Activity in Dunkirk and Later Years

The death of Philippe De Corbehem marks a definitive shift in the artist's trajectory. No longer under the guidance of his former mentor, Elias moves to Dunkirk. He establishes himself in this coastal setting, transitioning from a student of the craft to a settled practitioner. The city becomes his permanent base of operations.

His work during this period finds a steady rhythm through religious commissions. He produces several altar-pieces intended for the churches within Dunkirk and the surrounding neighbourhood. These works occupy the sacred spaces of the local community, marking his presence in the regional ecclesiastical landscape. He remains active in this capacity until his life reaches its end.

The final chapter of his life concludes in Dunkirk. He dies there on April 22, 1741. His presence in the town remains fixed from his arrival until his death.
