The Life and Artistic Journey of Teofilo Patini

Born in Castel di Sangro, Abruzzo, Teofilo Patini was an Italian painter who practiced in a Realist style. His early life was marked by classical studies in Sulmona under Leopoldo Dorrucci, followed by studies in philosophy at the University of Naples before he transferred to the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples. His path was interrupted by military service; at age twenty, he enlisted in the volunteer forces of Garibaldi, specifically the Cacciatori del Gran Sasso, and later served in the National Guard of Castel di Sangro. His academic success, including a stipend to study in Florence and a scholarship to travel to Rome, allowed him to develop his craft, eventually leading to his marriage to Teresa Tabasco.

Patini's career faced a challenge when he was afflicted with trachoma, an ophthalmologic infection, which curtailed his painting for a time. Despite this, he continued to produce works such as La guardiana delle oche, Case di campagna, and I notabili del mio paese. His focus shifted toward the lives of poor peasants, exemplified by Il ciabattino. In 1882, he was named director of the Scuola di Arti e Mestieri of L'Aquila, and in 1884, he was commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture to visit art museums in Germany.

Exhibitions and Subject Matter

Throughout his career, Patini exhibited various works across Italy. In Turin, he displayed Ogni buon stivale doventa ciabatta, Lo studio di Salvator Rosa, and La prima lezione di equitazione. In Milan, he showed L' Erede, a canvas depicting a peasant and his grieving wife. His exhibitions in 1884 at Turin included Vanga e Latte, and in Venice, he exhibited Beasts of burden. Other notable works include The Three Orphans, which utilized earthy tones to depict its subject matter.

While much of his work focused on genre subjects and the reality of rural poverty, Patini also painted sacred subjects for various locations, including:

His religious works included Il Purgatorio o Redenzione, The Guardian Angel, St Carlo Borromeo among the plague victims, and L’Immacolata e Santi.
