Biografia

The Life and Early Years of Aloïse Corbaz

In the city of Lausanne, Switzerland, Aloïse Corbaz entered a world of modest means in 1886. Her early years were marked by a profound loss when she was only eleven years old, losing her mother to the exhaustion of multiple pregnancies. This early hardship left her to grow up in a household where her older sister, Marguerite, took charge of the family with an iron fist. Despite these domestic struggles, a certain musicality seemed to run through the family blood; many of her kin were drawn to song or the playing of instruments.

Aloïse herself possessed a gifted, lovely voice that would define her youthful ambitions. She did not merely sing for pleasure but sought a higher calling, dedicating herself to the study of music. She took formal lessons from the organist of Lausanne Cathedral and found her place within the local choir. These early experiences of melody and rhythm were deeply ingrained in her spirit. By the time she earned her baccalauréat in 1906, her heart was set upon the stage, dreaming of a life as an opera singer.

Life in Germany and Return to Switzerland

After working as a dressmaker, she left for Germany in 1911, seeking a different life. In Potsdam, she found employment as a teacher and a governess within the court of the German Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was during these years of service that an intense and obsessive romantic passion for the Kaiser began to take hold of her mind. This internal devotion would eventually shape the very foundations of her inner world.

The outbreak of World War I changed everything, necessitating her return to Switzerland. The turbulence of the era and the weight of her private delusions led to a diagnosis of schizophrenia. In 1918, she was committed to the asylum at Cery-sur-Lausanne. By 1920, she was moved to an annex of the hospital known as la Rosiere in Gimel. She would remain within the walls of this institution for the rest of her life, staying there until her death in 1964.

Artistic Technique and Visual Style

Her hand moved with a restless, driving energy, seeking to fill every available space upon the surfaces she gathered. This compulsion to leave no inch of paper untouched created a sense of horror vacui, a dense crowding of imagery that mirrored the intense inner worlds she inhabited. She did not rely on fine canvases, but instead turned to whatever was at hand, working upon salvaged wrapping paper, cardboard, and other found scraps. To expand her vision beyond the limits of a single sheet, she would often stitch multiple pieces of paper together with thread or yarn, creating large, flowing compositions that could be viewed from many sides.

The colors she employed were as unconventional as the surfaces they adorned. She reached for the vivid hues of crayons and colored pencils, yet her palette also drew from the world around her in more tactile ways. She used the juice of crushed geranium flowers to stain her papers and even applied toothpaste to achieve specific tones. These materials helped her build a visual universe centered on themes of eroticism and romance. Her drawings focused on women with voluptuous curves and wild, tousled hair, often depicted with wide blue eyes. These figures were frequently surrounded by lovers dressed in military uniforms, creating a theatrical and highly decorative scene that seemed to pulse with a private, operatic passion.

Discovery and Recognition by Jean Dubuffet

For many years, her creative impulses remained a private matter. Around 1920, she began to draw and write poetry in secret, keeping her inner visions tucked away from the eyes of the institution. It was not until 1936 that her output began to draw the attention of those around her, specifically the hospital director and a general practitioner. They recognized the significance of the marks she was making upon the paper, seeing a world unfolding through her hands that the medical world had previously overlooked.

The true turning point arrived in 1947 when her work was finally discovered by Jean Dubuffet. He looked upon her prolific output and saw something profound in her relationship with her own mind. He believed that she had found a way to cure herself, not by fighting against her illness, but by choosing to cultivate it and making use of it to build a private universe. This perspective allowed her to transform her internal struggles into a visible, expansive reality.

Through this recognition, she became a prominent figure within the growing field of art brut. Her presence in this movement helped define its boundaries, as her prolific use of crayons, colored pencils, and even flower juice created a visual language that was entirely her own. She did not merely exist within the asylum; she built a world within it, one that eventually commanded the attention of the wider art community.

Legacy and Major Exhibitions

The reach of her visual universe extended far beyond the walls of the asylum in Gimel. In 2012, the Collection de l'Art Brut and the Musée cantonal des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne brought her inner world to a wider audience through a solo exhibition titled Aloïse. Le Ricochet Solaire. This recognition helped cement her place in the history of art, ensuring her private visions were seen by those who study the depths of human expression.

Her presence in the cultural consciousness was further solidified through film. In 1975, a film titled Aloïse was released, starring Delphine Seyrig, which explored the life and spirit of the artist. This cinematic portrayal helped to translate her intense, theatrical imagery into a medium that resonated with a new generation of viewers.

Even in recent years, her influence remains palpable in the highest circles of international art. A large multi-panel work was featured in the 2024 Venice Biennale, proving that her expansive, stitched compositions still command attention on the global stage. Her ability to transform found paper and simple pigments into such commanding, large-scale narratives continues to fascinate those who encounter her work in museums and galleries alike.
