Architectural Legacy of Marshall Arnott Sisson

Marshall Arnott Sisson was a British architect whose professional career spanned from 1928 to 1970. Born in Gloucester, United Kingdom, he received his education at Leighton Park, a Quaker school in Reading, Berkshire. His formal architectural training took place at the Bartlett School of Architecture in London and the British School at Rome. During his formative years, he conducted research on Roman architecture in the Middle East and spent time working in the practice of John Russell Pope in New York.

His early architectural commissions were characterized by a modernist style, including cubical houses in Cambridge and a residential development in Carlyon Bay, Cornwall. One notable project from this period was Gull Rock House, which utilized monolithic reinforced concrete. His work from this era gained recognition through inclusion in the "Modern Architecture in England" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 1937.

Evolution of Style and Professional Service

Following 1935, Sisson transitioned toward traditional architectural styles, exemplified by his neo-Georgian public library in Colchester. His later career involved significant post-war projects, such as the Orchard Building for Pembroke College, Cambridge, and various buildings for the University of Durham. He was also deeply involved in conservation and restoration, working on London buildings like St John's, Smith Square, and projects for the National Trust. His expertise extended to the dismantling and transport of St Mary Aldermanbury to Missouri and the conversion of buildings for The Queen's College, Oxford.

Sisson held prominent positions within the Royal Academy, serving as its surveyor from 1947 to 1965 and as its treasurer from 1965 to 1970. He was elected as a Royal Academician in 1963. In 1949, he published a book titled Country Cottages. He retired in 1970 and passed away in Cambridge.
