A Prodigious Life in Art

Patrick Bakker was a Dutch artist who worked in oil paintings, pen, and pastel drawings. Born in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, he was considered a "prodigy" at the time of his death. His brief career saw him move from the Netherlands to France and England, Germany, Venice, and Vienna. He studied at the Académie Julian, Académie Colarossi, and the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His artistic output was characterized by an expressive freedom in color, confident draughtsmanship, and controlled impetuosity.

His work displayed a stylistic diversity depending on the medium used. In his oil paintings and pastels, he was noted for a sensual, expressive, and even expressionist technique, often utilizing bitter-sweet and dissonant color juxtapositions. His ink drawings, by contrast, often featured a more delicate and draughtsmanly approach, sometimes contrasting detailed renderings against large areas of blank space.

Beyond his formal paintings and drawings, Bakker maintained a habit of creating caricatures, doodles, and illustrations. He also wrote poems in French, English, Dutch, and German, which he often illustrated with imaginative scribbles and fantastical figures. While he only exhibited once during his lifetime in 1932, his work has been featured in exhibitions at the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum and the Van Abbe Museum.
