Factsheet

A Life in Rome

Colin Morison was a Scottish art dealer, painter, sculptor, merchant, and art collector. Born in Deskford, Scotland, he studied at King's College in Aberdeen before traveling to Rome, arriving around 1754 or 1755 with the financial support of Lord Findlater. During his time in Rome, he entered the studio of Anton Raphael Mengs to perfect his skills in sculpture and, most notably, painting.

While living in Rome, Morison resided on via San Sebastianello, near the Piazza di Spagna. His professional life was marked by a significant shift after a hunting accident left him nearly blind. Following this incident, he transitioned his focus toward activities related to the art market, antiquities, and serving as a guide. He became a central figure within the British artistic colony in Rome, operating alongside figures such as Gavin Hamilton, Thomas Jenkins, and James Byres.

Artistic Legacy

Morison's known artistic output includes the oil painting on canvas titled Andromache Offering Sacrifice to Hector’s Shade, which dates to approximately 1760. This work is his only known painting. Upon his death in Rome, an inventory of his paintings was compiled; however, many of the works intended for the Royal College of Aberdeen by his will were subsequently requisitioned by the French Government.
