The Formative Years and Early Style

Born in Munich, Germany, Erna Dinklage was a painter and graphic artist. Following her parents' divorce, she spent her youth in Geneva and Berlin before returning to Munich to live with her father, Paul Crodel. Her artistic journey led her to the Munich art world, where she became a member of the Neue Sezession and later a co-founder of the Munich artists' association "Die Juryfreien."

This era produced vibrant garden scenes and numerous portraits, such as the Dreierportrait (1930) and the Doppelportrait of Oskar Maria Graf and Georg Schrimpf. Her compositions often featured a strong emphasis on form, a luminous color palette, and a poetic or naive quality.

This transitional period saw her exploring still lifes, watercolors, and the technique of half-relief. Her work during this time included portraits like Max Picard and Lothar-Günther Buchheim mit seiner Frau Diethild.

In her final creative phase, which lasted from 1970 to 1990, she developed a distinct style known as Arte Cifra. Working in the seclusion of Dietramszell, her paintings moved away from her earlier realism. These works often featured:
