A Life Rooted in the Natural World
Born in Conway, United States, Everett Spruce developed an early fascination with the natural world while living on a mountain in Arkansas. As a child, he spent time atop the mountain where his father grew apples and peaches, a period that sparked a curiosity for nature and led him to begin sketching landscapes to understand his surroundings. During his youth, he also gained recognition for drawing caricatures of his classmates. After moving to Dallas to study at the Dallas Art Institute, he was introduced to various artistic movements, including Post-Impressionism and Cubism, as well as the styles of the Quattrocento. His education under Olin Travis provided him with a foundation in color, form, and perspective.
Artistic Style and Career
Spruce was a painter and printmaker whose work often focused on landscape themes. He was known for using angular and distinct renderings of flora and geographical features, often employing near-primitive stylized forms. His technical approach was diverse; he worked with oils, creating textural modulations through the use of the knife and brush, and utilized acrylics, crayon, and encaustic painting to achieve vibrant colors and mosaic-like textures. Beyond his studio practice, Spruce had a significant career as a museum professional and educator. He served at the Dallas Museum of Art and later joined the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin, where he eventually served as a professor and Director of Graduate Studio Art.
