A Life in Reims

Born in Reims, France, Jean Hellart was a painter and decorator who left a significant mark on the artistic landscape of his home city. His professional journey began with an apprenticeship in Paris under Jean Harmant and Charles Le Brun, with whom he traveled to Rome. His career was marked by prestigious appointments, serving as the decorator for the château d'Étoges and becoming the painter of the city of Reims in 1660. By 1667, he had achieved the distinction of becoming the painter to the Duke of Burgundy.

Hellart was a central figure in the local art community, notably as the creator of the Académie rémoise de peinture et de sculpture in 1677. After presenting his works to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, he and sculptor Isaac Delacroix received commissions to establish an academic school in Reims. His legacy continued through his students, including his sons Claude Hellart and Jacques Hellart, as well as Noël Halé.

Artistic Works and Subjects

The works of Jean Hellart encompass both grand religious narratives and intimate portraiture. As a painter for the archbishops of Reims, he composed large-format canvases depicting scenes from the Holy Scriptures, such as Christ and the miraculous catch. Other notable religious subjects include The Baptism of Clovis and The Multiplication of the Loaves and Fishes.

In addition to his sacred works, Hellart was a prolific portraitist. His output included numerous portraits, such as those of Doctor Colin and Nicolas Dallier, and a vast collection of approximately 78 portraits located in the gallery of the château d'Étoges.
