The Visionary Landscapes of Abergavenny
The Usk Valley provides the initial backdrop for the life of John Lewis. Born in 1933 in Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, his early years are rooted in the specific topography of the United Kingdom. This landscape does not merely exist as a setting; it informs a way of seeing. His work moves beyond simple representation, leaning into a visionary quality that transforms the natural world into something more profound.
His brushwork captures a sense of atmosphere that feels both grounded and otherworldly. There is a specific tension in his landscapes, a way of rendering the terrain that suggests a deeper, perhaps spiritual, layer beneath the surface of the hills and valleys. He does not merely paint what is there; he paints the feeling of being present within it.
