During her formative years, she spent time in Rome alongside her friend Susan Isabel Dacre. Her work often incorporated elements of Neoclassicism, Pre-Raphaelitism, and Impressionism. She was noted for her robustly painted figures and was considered a daring painter of the nude.
Her career was marked by significant professional milestones, including being the first woman elected as an associate of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1922. Swynnerton was an active supporter of the women's suffrage movement and was a signatory to the 1889 National Union of Women's Suffrage Societies' Declaration in Favour of Women's Suffrage.
