The Life and Artistic Journey of Endre Nemes

Born Endre Nágel in Pécsvárad, Hungary, the artist later changed his name to Nemes in 1928. His early life saw him moving from the town of Igló to Vienna, where he studied philosophy, before working as a journalist and publishing poetry in Slovakia. His creative path led him to Prague, where he worked as a cartoonist and studied at the Prague Art Academy. Following his time in Czechoslovakia, he traveled through Finland and Norway before settling in Sweden, where he held his first solo exhibition in 1941 in Stockholm. He eventually became a Swedish citizen in 1948.

Nemes was a Surrealist artist with a background in Lyrical Abstraction. His fanciful paintings often featured motifs such as harlequins and clocks. Beyond the canvas, he was a pioneer in Sweden for his use of enamels in public art, notably designing the Zodiak Clock in Västertorp and the façade of the municipal administration building in Alafors. His diverse career included serving as a director for the Valand School of Fine Arts in Gothenburg and designing sets and costumes for the opera house and the municipal theatre.
