George Baer (1893 – 1971) emerged from the vibrant artistic milieu of Chicago, inheriting a legacy of craftsmanship from his father, Leopold Baer, who operated a photoengraving business. Recognizing his sons’ innate talent for visual expression, Leopold encouraged George and Martin to pursue their passions for art—a decision that would profoundly shape their creative trajectories. Baer's formal education began at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he honed his skills in drawing and painting before embarking on a journey of artistic exploration abroad.
