Manly Edward MacDonald was a Canadian impressionistic painter born in Point Anne, close to Belleville, Ontario. The son of a farmer and fisherman, his work focused on recording en plein air rural Ontario practices. His canvases often depicted the rhythmic labor of the countryside, including:

Beyond these rural scenes, he painted many portraits of local dignitaries and family members. While he primarily worked in oil-on-board or oil-on-canvas, his artistic range extended to pastels and various etching methods.

Artistic Legacy and Recognition

MacDonald’s formal training began at the Ontario School of Art and continued at the Albright School of Art in Buffalo, New York, and the School of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. His career saw significant international exposure, including exhibitions at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley and the New York World's Fair. In 1918, he was commissioned as a war artist to document Canada's war effort, producing the Women in War Series, which illustrates women supporting food gathering during the war.

A dedicated educator and member of several professional organizations, he taught at the Ontario College of Art and was a founding member of the Ontario Institute of Painters. His prolific output included approximately 2000 works, many of which are held in permanent collections such as the National Gallery of Canada and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
