Si ritiene che sia stato completato in giro 1665 . si vede che la signora sta scrivendo una lettera ed è stata interrotta , così delicatamente gira la testa per vedere cosa sta succedendo . Indossa dodici perle ( 10 sulla collana e due orecchini ) . La maggior parte dei suoi dipinti sono ambientati nella sua casa , che ha ereditato . Molti degli oggetti visti nel dipinto , come il woman's cappotto , il panno sul tavolo , e il filo di perle , appare in altre opere di vermeer . Ciò ha portato alla speculazione che lui o i suoi familiari possedessero gli oggetti , e anche che i soggetti dei dipinti sono i suoi parenti . È stato spesso suggerito che nei suoi dipinti , Vermeer ha cercato di concedere ai suoi modelli ciò che non poteva dotare di sua moglie e famiglia : calma e benessere .
