Im 1641 der vierte herzog von lennox wurde von seinem cousin zum ersten herzog von richmond ernannt , charles i. , könig von england . vier jahre zuvor hatte er mary villiers geheiratet , tochter der king’s lieblings , der herzog von buckingham . van dyck hat dieses majestätische porträt wahrscheinlich kurz danach gemalt Stuart’s investition in den orden des strumpfbandes , im november 1633 . Der silberne stern , das " kleiner george " medaille auf einem grünen band , und das strumpfband selbst ( unterhalb des linken knies ) sind die order’s insignien . Der windhund deutet auf adel hin ( durch anspielung auf ihre jagdprivilegien ) und vielleicht die tugend der treue .
