ingres schuf dieses gemälde im auftrag des kaisers napoleon bonaparte , wer hatte es den bürgern versprochen, wenn die stadt lüttich , Belgien , als zeichen der wertschätzung für ihre gnade , trotz ihres miserablen zustands nach österreichischem bombardement . napoleon kann nicht dazu gebracht werden, sich für das gemälde zu setzen , Ingres musste das neu erstellen emperor’s bild basierend auf einem 1802 porträt von Jean-Antoine Gros . Auf dem gemälde , Napoleon unterzeichnet ein dekret , das gleiche dekret, das gab 300 , 000 franken an die stadt lüttich für den wiederaufbau ihrer stadt . im gegensatz zum gros-gemälde , Napoleon wird nicht als erobernder held dargestellt , aber als ziviloffizier , die pflicht des volkes tun .
