La virgen se sienta con un vestido rojo vibrante sobre un chal azul profundo , sosteniendo al niño desnudo , quien se para en su regazo . Las dos figuras se abrazan en un tierno abrazo. , como solo una madre y un niño pueden hacer , que es un elemento típico de Murillo’s pinturas . Este toque tierno es indicativo de un elemento realista que está presente en todos Murillo’s pinturas , casi como es una instantánea de las dos figuras antes de que se posaran por completo , como en una fotografía sincera .
