En 1858 courbet se quedó en frankfurt, donde se colocó un estudio a su disposición en el que jóvenes pintores podían verlo en el trabajo. . tres fotos importantes datan de su estadía en frankfurt : el cazador alemán , Los Hunters' comida y la mujer de frankfurt . A courbet le gustaba ir de caza mientras estaba en el Franche-Comté o alemania , pero pintar escenas deportivas de este tipo en gran formato era un asunto muy diferente y presentaba un desafío considerable , uno que resolvió al optar por un enfoque ornamental .
