Cette peinture est l'un des plus beaux d'un groupe de portraits ambitieusement composés peints pendant Lotto's période vénitienne principale , dans les années qui ont suivi son retour de bergame . l'œuvre centrale du groupe est le portrait d'andrea odoni ( 1527 ) , d'autres exemples majeurs incluent l'homme avec une patte d'or ( c . 1527 ) et portrait d'une dame en lucrèce ( 1530-32 ) . Tous ces portraits partagent les caractéristiques d'un large ( plutôt que vertical ) format , three-quarter-length pose , et un environnement décrit de façon circonstancielle rempli d'objets qui semblent porter une signification symbolique .
