l'adoration des mages était un thème commun dans l'art florentin de la renaissance . cette peinture a été commandée par un banquier lié à la maison des médicis , gaspare di zanobi del lama , pour une chapelle à l'église santa maria novella , qui a depuis été détruit . botticelli a peint de nombreux membres de la famille des médicis sur la scène , y compris del lama lui-même , cosimo de medici , piero et giovanni medici ( Cosimo’s fils ) , et giuliano et lorenzo ( Cosimo’s petits-fils ) . bien que les quatre aînés des médicis soient déjà décédés lorsque botticelli a peint cette pièce , lorenzo a effectivement dirigé florence .
