In 1641 il quarto duca di lennox fu creato primo duca di richmond da suo cugino , carlo i. , re d'inghilterra . quattro anni prima aveva sposato mary villiers , figlia del king’s preferito , il duca di buckingham . van dyck probabilmente dipinse questo maestoso ritratto poco dopo Stuart’s investitura nell'ordine della giarrettiera , a novembre 1633 .
