Il lato gay della vita non si mostra mai a me . . . . la cosa più gay che conosco è la calma , il silenzio , che è così dolce , o nella foresta o nella terra coltivata . Così ha scritto Jean-François Miglio . Trasmetteva calma e silenzio in questa composizione pacifica , che è ancorato da una monumentale figura contadina . Una nuvola ha cancellato il sole , e la luce soffusa del giorno nasconde i dettagli mentre enfatizza la pastorella , cane da pastore , e si affollano come archetipi . La pastorella e il cane si stagliano contro il cielo e il campo , aspettando pazientemente e con dignità nel mondo senza tempo del contadino , che millet cercava di nobilitare nel suo lavoro . Questo pastello , forse il primo di almeno quattro su questo tema , inerente a Millet's dipinto con lo stesso nome . Ha esposto il dipinto , ora in Paris's Musée d'Orsay , con grande successo al salon di 1864 .
