van gogh ha creato una serie di dipinti di girasole a 1888 . li ha creati come decorazioni per la casa gialla di arles in cui van Gogh’s ospite , paul gaugin sarebbe rimasto , Purtroppo , dovuto a falling-out con gaugin , dopodiché van gogh si tagliò il lobo dell'orecchio in un panico paranoico , van gogh non è mai stato in grado di decorare la sua casa gialla . Mandò invece i dipinti in mostra , immaginando i due dipinti di girasole su entrambi i lati del suo dipinto di berceuse , e chiamandolo trittico di berceuse , esponendo i dipinti alla mostra les xx a parigi . In seguito ha esposto tutti e tre i dipinti insieme alla suddetta mostra in 1890 .
