Longhi’s il terribile fallimento al suo primo grande tentativo di pittura storica è probabilmente il motivo per cui è passato dal dipingere grandi temi storici a più piccoli , scene tranquille della vita sociale . il suo mentore successivo fu giuseppe maria crespi , che dipinse studi sulla vita contemporanea , ed è stato quindi uno dei motivi per cui longhi è stato in grado di avere successo come artista popolare .
