l'adorazione dei magi era un tema comune nell'arte fiorentina rinascimentale . questo dipinto fu commissionato da un banchiere collegato alla casa dei medici , gaspare di zanobi del lama , per una cappella nella chiesa di santa maria novella , che da allora è stato distrutto . botticelli dipinse molti membri della famiglia medici nella scena , incluso lo stesso del lama , cosimo de 'medici , piero e giovanni medici ( Cosimo’s figli maschi ) , e giuliano e lorenzo ( Cosimo’s nipoti ) . sebbene i quattro più grandi dei medici fossero già deceduti quando botticelli dipinse questo pezzo , lorenzo governò efficacemente firenze . Botticelli includeva anche un suo ritratto , nella veste gialla nell'angolo in basso a destra del dipinto .
