The Firebird is a well-known costume design by Bakst, which he created for Igor Stravinsky’s ballet of the same name. This was a breakthrough ballet, not only because it was Stravinsky’ first popular ballet, but because it was the first ballet in which Stravinsky collaborated with Sergei Diaghilev, Bakst, and the Ballet Russes. This collaboration would also lead to the production of Petrushka and The Rite of Spring, which were both highly admired for their costuming and set design. Beside Leon Bakst, Alexandre Benois was also a prominent designer for Stravinsky’s ballet’s producing many designs for the Ballet Russes productions.
