Neben landschaften , Corot arbeitete im studio an studien aus dem leben . Die männlichen freunde oder jungen mädchen, die für ihn modellierten, variierten ihre posen während der sitzungen , als corot zahlreiche skizzen machte , und wählte dann eine haltung oder einen ausdruck aus, die er später in einer vollständigen komposition verwenden konnte , dadurch verschmelzen realismus mit gefühl und allegorie . So verklärt , seine modelle werden zu archetypen , allegorische figuren , und gottheiten . in diesem gemälde wurde das modell in eine barfüßige muse verwandelt, die tief in einem buch versunken ist , ihr kopf kranzte in blumen .
