The portraits representing Martin Luther and his wife Katharina von Bora were probably executed by the Cranach workshop. Cranach mostly painted religious subjects, first in the Catholic tradition, and later trying to find new ways of conveying Lutheran religious concerns in art; but he also painted portraits for a time.
