"The vast cathedral erected in Orvieto beginning in 1290 was intended to enshrine an important relic, the bloodstained cloth from the Mass at Bolsena. In 1263 the relic was transferred to Orvieto, where it was presented to Pope Urban IV, who, the following year proclaimed the Feast of Corpus Christi from this Umbrian hill town.The bloody cloth that was to be the focus for worship in Orvieto was enshrined in a magnificent two-sided reliquary with a gabled shape that clearly was meant to refer to the façade of the cathedral and to thus create an identification between the two. The reliquary is adorned with scenes from the Mass at Bolsena and the Life of Christ in colourful enamel; the artists are identified on the inscription as the Sienese goldsmith Ugolino di Vieri and his unnamed collaborators. For the scenes from the Life of Christ Ugolino followed the representations on Duccio's Maestà; for the new scenes that he had to invent for the story of the Miracle at Bolsena, Ugolino drew inspiration from compositions by Ambrogio Lorenzetti.The picture shows the back of the reliquary because the scenes are in better condition than those on the front, which have lost some of their enamel colour. Otherwise, the scenes on the front and back are identical."
