Kandinsky pasó casi seis meses preparándose para crear esta pintura. , al principio con la intención de que el trabajo evoque una inundación , bautismo , destrucción y renacimiento, todo al mismo tiempo . Primero describió el trabajo en un panel de madera de gran tamaño , pero pronto experimentó un bloqueo artístico , y se encontró incapaz de pintar . gabrielle munter , su asistente en ese momento , le dijo que estaba bloqueado , y necesitaba liberarse de sus atavíos intelectuales que rodeaban la pintura . Ella sugirió que simplemente repitiera la palabra “ uberflut , ” sentido “ flood” o “ diluvio , ” centrándose en el sonido de la palabra en lugar de su significado , liberando su mente del bloque artístico y enfocándose solo en la música de la palabra . Kandinsky se puso a trabajar , y completé la pintura en tres días , todo el tiempo repitiendo la palabra como un mantra .
