Cuando la combinación inusual de objetos e inscripción en este still-life se descifra aprendemos que el tondo es un alegórico still-life destinado a anunciar la virtud de la templanza . Los still-life , Torrentius's solo pintura conocida , representa un enorme , half-full 'roemer' ( un vaso usado para beber vino ) entre un long-spouted jarra de agua y una jarra de vino , con un horse's brida por encima de ellos . En la repisa hay dos pequeños tubos de arcilla. . La inscripción en la partitura debajo del cristal dice : 'That que existe fuera de medida perece en el mal immeasurably' . A los iniciados , la implicación es clara . Indulgencia excesiva al beber o fumar tabaco ( un intoxicante recientemente introducido del nuevo mundo ) debe ser frenado .
