Dans 1858 courbet est resté à francfort où un studio a été mis à sa disposition dans lequel de jeunes peintres pouvaient le regarder au travail . trois photos majeures datent de son séjour à francfort : le chasseur allemand , Le Hunters' repas et la femme de francfort . Courbet aimait aller chasser tout en restant dans le Franche-Comté ou en allemagne , mais peindre des scènes sportives de ce genre en grand format était une question très différente et représentait un défi considérable , celui qu'il a résolu en optant pour une approche ornementale .
