C'est un large-scale ( 268 cm × 160 cm ) et la version mature d'un sujet qu'il avait traité plus tôt dans la jeune miniature st . Michael . les deux œuvres sont situées au louvre à paris . raphael a d'abord visité le sujet de michael à la demande de guidobaldo da montefeltro , duc d'urbino . La miniature a été achevée en 1504 ou 1505 au dos d'un dessin , peut-être chargé d'exprimer sa reconnaissance à louis xii de france pour avoir conféré l'ordre de saint michel à francesco maria i della rovere , Urbino's neveu et héritier . un peu plus d'une décennie après avoir terminé le petit st . Michael , Raphael a été chargé de revisiter le thème , produisant st . michael vanquishing satan pour le pape léon x .
