Les cascades étaient un sujet populaire et souvent peint par l'artiste . Dans le 1650s , Ruisdael a peint ses premiers paysages de montagne avec le même motif . Lui-même n'avait jamais été high-mountain régions ou en scandinavie . on pense qu'il a repris le motif d'allaert van everdingen , qui a voyagé en scandinavie en 1644 . Ruisdael's les sujets préférés sont de simples scènes boisées , similaires à ceux d'everdingen et de hobbema . Il est surtout connu comme un peintre d'arbres , et son rendu de feuillage , en particulier de l'âge des feuilles de chêne , se caractérise par le plus grand esprit et précision .
