Une jeune femme vêtue d'une élégante robe rouge est assise au premier plan, tournée vers la gauche et à la recherche half-smilingly au spectateur . c'est l'un des rares cas où vermeer anime une de ses figures avec un semblant d'expression . Elle semble être courtisée par un bon gentleman , se pencha et encouragea la jeune femme à prendre une gorgée du verre à vin qu'elle tient dans sa main .
