Al momento è stato commissionato , Raffaello era impegnato con molte altre opere , così de medici commissionò un'altra opera , la resurrezione di lazzaro , per farlo lavorare più velocemente . Dopo Raphael’s morte , de medici conservò il dipinto , che più tardi portato dalle truppe francesi a parigi nel 1797 . È stato risintonizzato 1815 , però , ed è stato al sicuro in vaticano , la sua posizione attuale , da allora .
