Maria Cassatt’s schwester lydia war ein großer teil ihres lebens . Keiner von ihnen beschloss zu heiraten , sie lebten zusammen in frankreich bis Lydia’s tod in 1882 . Während sie lebte , mary verwendete lydia als vorbild in vielen ihrer gemälde , die tasse tee ist einer von ihnen . Dieses gemälde ist eher ein genrebild als ein porträt , da es einen sozialen brauch darstellt, den cassatt in ihren gemälden viele male wiederholt hat : die einnahme einer tasse tee . Impressionistisch gemalt , viele kunstkritiker betrachteten das gemälde als unvollendet , aufgrund der tatsache, dass cassatt kleine periphere teile der leinwand unbemalt ließ .
