la peinture est située dans un jardin anglais à broadway dans les cotswolds , où john singer sargent a passé l'été 1885 . Sargent voulait capturer le niveau exact de lumière au crépuscule alors il a peint l'image à l'extérieur , à la manière impressionniste . Chaque jour, à une période de l'été et de l'automne, il peignait en quelques minutes lorsque la lumière était parfaite . l'été suivant, il reprend la peinture et finit enfin fin octobre 1886 . les filles sont dolly et polly barnard . leur père était l'illustrateur frederick barnard - un ami de Sargent's . Le titre vient du refrain d'une chanson populaire " ye shepherds tell me " par joseph mazzinghi .
