Sramaneras were introduced into Buddhism when Rahula, son of the Buddha, became a novice monk six years after the Buddha had attained enlightenment. When Rahula was a sramanera, he was fond of tricking others by telling lies. After the Buddha admonished him, he admitted his mistakes, became diligent in practice, and could endure insults and humiliation. Once, when his room was occupied by an older bhiksu, he took shelter in the lavatory to escape the rain. On another occasion, he was attacked and wounded in the head but he endured the assault in silence. Among the disciples, he was reputed as being foremost in self-discipline.
