The old Italian woman exemplifies the peasants of southern Italy. She wears a traditional head covering, with the white of the fabric contrasting with her suntanned face. With models like this being sought after by artists staying in the French Academy in the Villa Medici in Rome, Géricault must have painted her during his stay in Rome in 1816 and 1817. She was painted by other artists around the same time.
