The model holds a rope or staff in a position that could subsequently be adapted to a narrative context, perhaps a fisherman hauling a net. The same pose was captured in at least two other paintings, one of which is by Théodore Gericault. Because Gericault developed his skills in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin (1774–1833), all three paintings provide evidence of Guérin’s teaching practice. Working from the live model was a group activity, as Guérin himself knew from studying with history painter Jacques Louis David, the most influential teacher in Europe in the decades around 1800.
