This free standing reliquary cross in gilt silver on wood contains a sacred relic, a fragment of the True Cross, in an oval glass receptacle. The trapezoid shaped base is also decorated with plant motifs, centred on a radiating sun containing the trigram of Christ with nails and cross and supported by two kneeling angels. In the upper and lower parts of the medallion there are two cherubim with Indian features. The shaft and the arms of the cross contain plant designs, forming a sequence of small ovals which also contain tiny cherubim surmounted by a fleur-de-lis motif. This is repeated on a much larger scale at the top of the shaft and at the end of the arms, which are in turn adorned with lacy relief motifs. Due to its extremely balanced and elegant characteristics, this object work can be compared with the 17th century reliquary cross of the Comendadeira de Santos in the collection of Lisbon’s Museu de Arte Antiga, though its decorative vitality is enriched by items that are clearly Indo-Portuguese
