This pattern ‘Brocatel’ is one of the last three designs attributed to William Morris, alongside ‘Ispahan’ and ‘Golden Bough’. All three were designed for the Arts and Crafts Exhibition of 1888. It is possible that the patterns were designed in collaboration with John Henry Dearle, Morris’s apprentice who succeeded him as Art Director of Morris & Co.
